There are three youth groups meeting at the
moment.
Fusion
They are the youngest of the groups and
consist of students between school years 7 to 9. They meet on a Sunday
morning and are joined by their friends on a Wednesday evening at the SBC
youth club. We witnessed a sudden booming of this pack over the course of
this year and decided to put a limit on the members until we recruit more
volunteers. The majority of the Wednesday members are not part of our Sunday
morning group.
Phujii
This is the new team that is flourishing out
of old Fusion folk and are now in school years 9 to 11. They meet in a
larger size on a Sunday morning while on a Thursday a smaller part gathers
for a social time.
Synergy
The guys here are basically a young adults
group that meets on a Sunday evening who also form the core of the Ukraine
mission team. It most likely that most of them will be going to University
after the summer.
§
On Sunday mornings we have successfully followed a
contemporary set of Christian videos while at the moment we are going
through the gospel of Luke. The leaders have been doing exceptional work in
presentation and the young people have been brilliantly responsive.
§
Over the last year we have had some major outings with the
groups of about thirty young people to events at the ice rink, fun pool etc.
§
The Ukraine team has found great favour among the church and
altogether are supporting the orphan’s camp.
Things to look forward to are:
§
Fusion at Spree a Christian fun packed camping venue for
youth
§
Phujii’s weekend away at Polzeath (beach, the Tubestation
etc)
§
The mission to Ukraine at the orphan’s camp
Looking ahead to this summer
Each group has grown in a unique way both in
breadth (numbers) and depth (maturity) over the last couple years. Although
sadly a few young people moved out of groups most of them still are active
in the faith journey or conscious of it. There is always a tension between
being inclusive & accepting and being purposeful & satisfying in any group.
Aiming to be both is challenging and stretching though I hope that to be the
manner that we continue to practise our life with Jesus.
Success stories
There’s a lot of laughter in the groups
whether its through silly games, funny jokes or just the average
conversation.
Honesty and openness are cultivated in our
relationships as we listen to each other’s stories.
The Bible sessions require skilful
interaction of which they are steadily adapting to. They’re slowly
abandoning text answers or clichés and are thinking through the Bible for
themselves.
In honour of last years “report”: this is a
good ship and although sailing well and the journey is only now beginning.
My prayers are for our future on how God will steer us to new exciting
places.
